Why Jamming with Other Musicians Accelerates Songwriting

I decided a few days ago to reach out to one of the School of Rock adult program members and see if they were free to work on any projects together, start a band, etc. They were actually as free as I was in the evenings and had a similar background – we are both software engineers that put aside music for years to focus on our careers instead.

I went over to their house last night and we jammed for two hours, playing around on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, and drums. We didn’t have any songs in common in particular, so we just picked some chords and started grooving. We wrote a pretty catchy melody to a simple punk song, tinkered with a lead guitar idea for another song I’m halfway done with, and even accidentally stumbled upon a slow drum groove alongside a very black metal riff.

I’ve only written one song myself over the course of a few years, so it was awesome to come away with a song and a half in a single night just jamming around. Having somebody to bounce ideas, chords, beats, anything really to give support to a melody line goes very far.

Hopefully they’re down to jam again and keep the ideas flowing! I need to keep it in mind that you’ll go fast alone but go far together. I’ve got patience to go far these days compared to 10 years ago.
